THE WHALE WHALE SONG
By Hauen und Stechen, dir. Franziska Kronfoth for the BAM! Festival Volksbühne Berlin, 2019
Seamen heard the song of mermaids for a long time in the song of the whales. It is fodder tone, it is often also a love song, and it helps families to locate their members over enormous distances. But today whales have to learn to sing louder. Dead coral reefs swallow their song instead of reflecting it as before. Oil rigs, ship engines, sonars drown out their sound, destroying their orientation and leaving them stranded more and more frequently.
Hauen und Stechen are a music and theatre collective based in Berlin. They operate a sensual, emotionally charged theatre that seeks direct contact with the audience, overwrites classical music repertoire and brings it into contact with pop culture. As a tribute to the decaying music of the whales, THE WHALE WHALE SONG makes use of sources from a wide range of areas to take you deep into the menu of the relationship between humans and whales and, beyond them, nature.
